"Un día, one day, un jour", December 12 2022, latex on wall, San Andrés Cholula, approx 38 x 32 feet.
When Festival Emea offered me this wall, I knew it'd be a hard one to pull off as there was no scaffolding available and I'd only have one day to source paint and execute it. After chatting with Felipe, the home owner, and having him share the Aztec origins of his family members names and the things that he holds dear, I decided to take it on. The region has a more complex history than what I can cover here with many different pre-colombian societies, but one event that was important to him was the 1519 Cholula Massacre of 6000 locals at the hands of hernan cortes. Jeavi Mental, who provided me with ladders, pole extensions and all manners of support, had been bemoaning the continued legacy of spanish (and global) colonialism - I hope to have painted something that resonates with Felipe, Jeavi and other Poblanos.
While I don't usually like trompe l'oeil or anamorphosis due to their only working from a specific angle, given that this wall is quite recessed from the road the illusion works from life.
