Pentagonal Bitmapped Portrait
Project type
Mural, Mosaic, Optical Mixing
Date
May 2020
Location
Montréal
This piece takes on a different meaning in person and through our phones: only the pattern is seen in person while the face appears clearly digitally due to a change in scale. It was a blast watching people interact with this, take out their phones and see it take on different meanings. One person went home after taking a photo, looked at it and came back the next day to see how the face had appeared!
Process-wise, I started by painting the portrait using sight-size and grid approaches in a way that emphasizes tonal regions. Then with a digitally cut Stencil, I painted the aperiodic pentagon tiling in varied colours with much transparency. Finally, I filled in different tiles to create the portrait, mentally bitmap ping and dithering the image.
This was part of an alley jam organized by Waxhead.
