Big sisters, little sisters
Project type
Murals
Date
September 2024
Location
Lachine
"Grandes soeurs, petites soeurs", 14' x 59', aerosol and latex on brick, 2024. Produced thanks to the support of Lachine's urban arts program and its Notre-Dame street.
Located on unceded Haudenosonee lands, this mural led me to ask questions about my relationship with the land. Using strawberries as a guide, I first wanted to depict those strawberries that I'm used to in the background: identical, saturated and mass-produced. I then wanted to represent, in the foreground, the strawberries (and the world they symbolize) which I aspire to: free, individuated, authentic. Without wanting to renege fully on supermarket strawberries in favour of wild ones, I did wonder what may have been lost in the transition.
The title, translating to "Big Sisters, Little Sisters", invites the viewer to draw their own parallels, be it between he foreground and the background, between the girls, between the ripe Berries and the ones still green, or between the girls dressed in corn-coloured clothes and the strawberries they are picking.
While I am still very much learning and seeking answers to my queries, I invite you all to ponder these same questions as well as instruct me.
